Endolift journal · Areas · 4 min readLoose stomach skin after pregnancy: is Endolift an option?

Endolift can help some women with mild to moderate loose stomach skin and small fat pockets after pregnancy, once breastfeeding has finished and weight is stable. It tightens skin through tiny entry points under local anaesthetic. It does not repair separated muscles or remove heavy, overhanging skin, where a tummy tuck is usually better. Results vary.

Why the stomach changes after pregnancy

Pregnancy stretches the skin of the abdomen a great deal in a matter of months. For many women the skin recovers well. For others it stays looser, thinner or slightly crepey, especially around and below the belly button. Small pockets of fat can also linger on the lower abdomen and the flanks, even after weight returns to normal.

Several things affect how much the skin recovers: age, genetics, the number of pregnancies, how much weight was gained, skin quality before pregnancy, and sun exposure. Some changes improve on their own over the first year. That is a good reason not to rush into any treatment. Many women find that by the end of the first year, the picture is quite different from how it looked in the early months.

It also helps to separate 3 different problems, because they need different solutions. Loose skin is a skin problem. Stubborn fat is a fat problem. A rounded tummy that will not flatten with exercise can be a muscle problem, where the stomach muscles have separated. Endolift can only address the first 2.

When Endolift may help, and when it will not

Endolift works best on mild to moderate laxity with small pockets of fat. On the stomach, that usually means skin that looks a little loose or wrinkled when you sit or bend, rather than skin that hangs down over the scar line or the underwear.

  • Likely to help: mild to moderate loose skin, a soft lower tummy with small fat pockets, crepey texture around the belly button, small fat on the flanks.
  • Unlikely to help enough: heavy skin that hangs as an apron, a large amount of excess skin, or significant weight still to lose.
  • Not treated at all: separated stomach muscles, stretch marks as such, or general weight gain. Endolift is not a weight loss treatment and does not replace liposuction of large volumes.

Where skin is heavy and hanging, a tummy tuck usually gives a much clearer result, because it removes the excess skin and can repair the muscles. It is a bigger operation with a scar and a longer recovery. An honest clinician should tell you if that is the better route for you, even if it means you do not book a treatment with them.

Timing: when is it sensible to consider treatment?

Endolift is not suitable during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Beyond that, a few practical points help.

  1. Give your body time. Skin often continues to improve for months after the birth.
  2. Let your weight settle. Results last longer when weight is stable, and changes in weight afterwards can undo some of the benefit.
  3. Think about future pregnancies. Another pregnancy will stretch the skin again, so many women wait until their family is complete.
  4. Mention any scars, including a caesarean scar, and any history of keloid scarring, at your consultation.

What treatment and recovery involve

The genuine Endolift system uses the LASEmaR 1500 laser by Eufoton at 1470 nm. A fibre between 200 and 600 microns wide is passed under the skin through tiny entry points, with local anaesthetic. There are no incisions and no stitches. The laser contracts the fibrous bands under the skin, which gives some immediate tightening. It can liquefy small fat deposits. It also starts collagen remodelling, replacing weaker Type III collagen with stronger Type I, so the skin keeps improving for around 6 months.

The stomach is a larger area than the face, and treatment usually takes around 60 to 90 minutes. Most people need 1 session. Afterwards, expect swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness. Treated fat can feel firm or lumpy for a while, and parts of the skin may feel numb. Most of this settles within days, though firmness and numbness can take 1 to 2 weeks or longer. You wear a compression garment for 3 to 4 days.

Rarer risks include burns, uneven skin, infection and small scars at the entry points. These are uncommon but real, and they are covered on the side effects and safety page. For practical care in the days afterwards, see recovery and aftercare. Most people return to work the next day or within 48 hours.

Cost and results

At TK Medispa in Kensington, treatment of the stomach (upper and lower abdomen and flanks) costs £3,000. That includes the photo assessment, video consultation, treatment, local anaesthetic, aftercare and review. A single body area such as the flanks alone costs £2,000. The full list is on the cost page, and other body areas are on the body treatments page.

Results build over 3 to 6 months and can last up to 2 years. Age, skin quality, sun exposure, smoking and, above all, stable weight affect how long they last. Results vary, and the aim is firmer, smoother skin rather than the result of a surgical tummy tuck.

Dr Seth's view "After pregnancy, the most important part of the consultation is deciding whether this is a skin and fat problem or a muscle and excess skin problem. If a woman has mild looseness and a little stubborn fat, Endolift can be a reasonable option. If the skin hangs or the muscles have separated, I will say that a tummy tuck is the better operation, even though it is a bigger step."

Questions people also ask

Can I have Endolift while breastfeeding?

No. Endolift is not offered during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. It is sensible to wait until you have stopped, and until your weight has settled, before having the stomach assessed. Waiting also lets you see how much the skin recovers naturally.

Will Endolift get rid of my stretch marks?

Endolift is not a stretch mark treatment. Some women notice the skin looks smoother as it tightens, but stretch marks themselves usually remain. If stretch marks are your main concern, it is worth asking about treatments aimed at the skin surface instead.

Does Endolift fix a gap in the stomach muscles?

No. Endolift works on skin and small fat deposits beneath the skin. It does not reach or repair the stomach muscles. If the muscles have separated, a surgical repair, often as part of a tummy tuck, is the usual answer, and physiotherapy may also help.

What happens to the result if I get pregnant again?

Another pregnancy will stretch the abdominal skin again and is likely to undo much of the tightening. For that reason many women choose to wait until their family is complete before treating the stomach.
