Endolift journal · Safety · 5 min readEndolift side effects: what is normal, and when to call your clinic

After Endolift it is normal to have swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, temporary numbness and some firmness or small lumps where fat was treated. Most of this settles within days, while numbness and firmness can take 1 to 2 weeks or longer. Increasing pain, spreading redness, blistering, discharge or a change in your smile should be reported promptly.

Dr Rohit Seth marking treatment areas before Endolift

Almost everyone has some side effects after Endolift. The worry for most patients is not whether they will have any, but whether what they are seeing is normal. This guide sets out what usually happens, how long each effect tends to last, and the signs that mean you should contact the clinic that treated you. It is general information. If you are ever unsure, the right thing to do is ask your own clinic, ideally with a photo.

Why side effects happen at all

Endolift passes a very fine laser fibre, 200 to 600 microns wide, beneath the skin through a tiny entry point under local anaesthetic. The 1470 nm laser heats water and fat in the tissue. That heat contracts the fibrous bands under the skin, can liquefy small fat deposits and starts collagen remodelling. Heat and a fibre moving through tissue cause a controlled injury, and the body responds with inflammation. That inflammation is what you see and feel as swelling, redness and tenderness, and it is part of how the result develops.

Normal side effects and how long they last

The table below gives a general picture. Everyone heals differently, so use it as a guide rather than a timetable.

Side effectWhat it is likeUsual course
SwellingPuffiness over the treated area, often more noticeable in the morningMost settles within days; small amounts can linger longer
BruisingBlue, purple or yellow patches, especially near entry pointsUsually fades over days; varies a lot between people
RednessPink or flushed skin over the areaUsually settles within days
TendernessSoreness when touched, a little like a strained muscleEases over the first days
NumbnessReduced feeling over the treated skinCan take 1 to 2 weeks or longer to return
Firmness or lumpsHard or lumpy areas where fat was treatedUsually softens over 1 to 2 weeks or longer

Many people return to work the next day or within 48 hours. For the neck and body a compression garment or strap is usually worn for 3 to 4 days, which helps with swelling and comfort. You can read more practical detail in our guide to aftercare in the first 7 days.

Normal things that often worry people

A few effects are completely expected but tend to cause anxiety, so they are worth mentioning on their own.

  • Uneven swelling. Either side can swell more than the other, especially if you sleep on that side. This usually evens out.
  • Looking worse before looking better. In the first few days swelling can hide any tightening. The early look is not the result.
  • Lumps under the chin. Where fat was treated, firm patches are common and usually soften with time.
  • Tingling as feeling returns. Numb areas sometimes tingle or itch as sensation comes back.
  • Small entry marks. The tiny entry points can look like small red dots or scabs for a short time.

Signs that are not normal

These do not always mean something serious is wrong, but they should be reported to your clinic promptly rather than waited out.

  • Pain that is getting worse after the first 2 or 3 days, rather than better.
  • Redness that spreads, feels hot or comes with a fever. This can be a sign of infection.
  • Discharge or pus from an entry point.
  • Blistering, a white or grey patch, or a raw area on the skin surface. This can be a sign of a burn.
  • A change in your smile, such as the lower lip not moving evenly. This can happen if a nerve along the jaw, the marginal mandibular nerve, has been affected. It is usually temporary but should be assessed.
  • Swelling that is rapidly increasing, tight or very painful.
  • Dents, ridges or irregularity that are still clearly present once the swelling has gone.

If you have any difficulty breathing or swallowing, or feel very unwell, seek urgent medical help rather than waiting for the clinic.

Dr Seth's view "I would always prefer a patient to send me a photo and a question than to sit at home worrying. Most of the time it is ordinary swelling or a firm patch that will soften. When it is something that needs attention, seeing it early makes it much easier to manage."

Why side effects vary so much between people

It is common for 2 people to have the same treatment on the same day and recover quite differently. The area treated matters: the neck and under the chin often swell more than the cheeks, and body areas can feel tender for longer. People who bruise easily, or who take medicines or supplements that affect bleeding, tend to bruise more. Treating fat as well as skin usually means more firmness afterwards. Your own healing, how well you rest and whether you wear the compression garment as advised also play a part. None of this predicts the final result. A slower early recovery does not mean a worse outcome.

How to make normal side effects easier

You cannot avoid every side effect, but these simple steps usually help.

  1. Wear your compression garment or strap for as long as advised, usually 3 to 4 days for neck and body areas.
  2. Sleep with your head slightly raised for the first few nights after facial treatment.
  3. Keep entry points clean and follow the clinic's instructions on washing.
  4. Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and very hot baths for the period your clinic advises.
  5. Do not massage or press on firm areas unless you have been told to.
  6. Keep your review appointment, even if you feel fine.

Questions people also ask

How long does swelling last after Endolift?

Most visible swelling settles within days, and many people feel comfortable going back to work the next day or within 48 hours. Smaller amounts of swelling can linger for longer, particularly under the chin and along the jaw. Swelling can also hide early tightening, so the true result takes months to show.

Is it normal to have lumps after Endolift?

Yes. Firm areas or small lumps are common where fat was treated, especially under the chin. They usually soften over 1 to 2 weeks or longer. If a lump is red, hot, increasingly painful or still clearly present once swelling has gone, ask your clinic to check it.

When will the numbness go?

Numbness usually improves gradually over 1 to 2 weeks, though it can take longer for some people. You may notice tingling or itching as feeling returns. Take care with very hot or cold items on numb skin, since you may not feel them as well as usual.

Can Endolift affect my smile?

Uncommonly, heat or swelling near the marginal mandibular nerve along the jaw can cause temporary weakness of the lower lip, making the smile look uneven. It usually recovers over weeks to months. Report any change in your smile to the clinic that treated you so it can be assessed.
